Current statistics estimate that there are 320,000 people experiencing core homelessness in the UK and between 5-25% of them are homeless with a pet.
Hostels play a crucial role in addressing homelessness however, only 10% of hostels currently accept pets, leaving bonded pet owners at a disadvantage. Hostels often hesitate to accommodate pets due to concerns regarding staff training, health and safety or pet welfare. This forces people to choose between shelter and their pet - and only 7% will choose to surrender their pet.
By ignoring the owner/pet bond we are denying people the support they need and deserve to move forward in their lives.
The need for pet-friendly hostels and support for unhoused individuals and their pets is evident. We recognise this and the need for more resources to help unhoused pet owners care for their animals and promote responsible pet ownership.
Our Dog Champion Scheme was developed in response to the lack of pet friendly hostels and resources for
unhoused pet owners to find safe shelter.
Providing fully accredited team training via our online platform to ensure that all staff are comfortable working with dogs. Training on dog behaviours and how to settle a dog into the accommodation. 1:1 support for individual cases where necessary.
We partner with a network of organisations across the country.
Our dedicated team can connect you with support services for you and your pet in your local area.
Working with owners to enhance their knowledge of dog behaviour, training, and diet, and assists in creating pet "C.V.s" for landlords.
Providing Pet Policies and Owner agreements to ensure a positive relationship between the owner, dog and the team.
Providing team canine First Aid training and a First Aid kit. This ensures that any accidents can be dealt with quickly by the team before referral to one of our vet teams for further treatment.
Providing residents with full accessible veterinary support from our supporting practices including 27/7 video vet service. We recommend and support all neutering of residents pets.
We hope that many more local authorities and accommodation providers will view the Dog Champions Scheme as a positive step to removing the barriers against homelessness and dog ownership, reaching the up to 25% currently unsupported homeless individuals.
We are expanding rapidly to provide this vital, life saving service. If you are a local authority or provider who would like our support please contact us ; info@streetpaws.org.uk
The difference they have provided to our Clients with dogs lives has been amazing!
He's my life and I wont be without him. You guys are the reason I'm in the hostel today with my dog. You didn't give up and you told everyone how important he was Thank you
They are flexible, responsive, always put the needs of the dog first, caring and compassionate. They are a brilliant partner to have in our schemes and help us to achieve our goals of ending rough sleeping and creating homes for people.
They do a fabulous job, and without them we would not be able to house and support homeless people and their dogs. No person should ever rough sleep and many dog owners will choose to rough sleep rather than leave their pets.
With Dog Champions support we have been enabled to help and house a homeless person and their Dog family.
